Paper Description

Edit Paper Description Content
In this paper, you will develop self-awareness and refine your interpersonal and intercultural communication skills. You will familiarise yourself with both the theory and practice of professional communication in your everyday life contexts, specifically in organisational, business, and workplace settings. You will get an opportunity to practice your speaking and listening skills by participating and leading class discussions, collaborating with your peers, negotiating, and preparing a presentation on a topic. Apart from communicating effectively in person, the quality and strength of your written communication plays a crucial role. In this paper, you will learn how to evaluate and improve your own business writing.

This paper will be run in a "blended" format. This means that a lot of your learning and studying is undertaken outside the classroom by you as an individual student, or by you as a member of a collaborative team. You will prepare for class each week by reading/watching/absorbing prescribed articles, case studies, videos, TED talks, and other resources, and thinking about the issues raised in them. You will prepare questions and articulate your thoughts and opinions in the class discussions and, as members of groups, you will work together through issues and problems with your peers. The success of your learning depends on the amount of time and effort you put into your own learning about the concepts which you will then bring to class for discussion. It is expected that every student will prepare for every session ahead of time and contribute actively to activities and discussions in class.

The teaching team for this paper reflects the diversity of people in organisations. We represent four different countries of origin, many languages, and multiple disciplines. We work together virtually and in person. Two of the team are on campus in Hamilton, one is in Tauranga and one is in South Africa due to COVID travel bans. So while we teach you about communication and teamwork in organisations, we’ll be practising it as well.
